Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Partners with Chipman and OMA to Clear Out Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most customers walk into a movie theater focused on the movie they're about to watch. They spot the giant screen, plush seats, and maybe the smell of fresh popcorn. What they don't see is all that unfolds behind the scenes to bring that experience to life—or what it takes when it's time to decommission decades of hardware and make way for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers had the chance to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we assisted with the removal of outdated projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It wasn't your typical commercial move. It called for careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between dependable relocation partners.
Projects like these are part of why we love what we do. No two commercial moves are exactly the same, and that's what keeps our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
Among the finest elements of commercial moving is the range of work.
In one week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're moving physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we find ourselves inside a movie theater, carefully taking apart and hauling out equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was notably memorable because it entailed removing large digital cinema projection systems, as well as several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like stepping back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection became the industry standard.
For film lovers, it was riveting.
For our crew, it was a reminder that every piece of equipment we move carries its own history.
Great Projects Begin with Careful Planning
Projects like this don't start when the moving truck shows up.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team carefully coordinates logistics, scheduling, building access, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Partnering with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we coordinated every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed safely and efficiently. One of the biggest benefits of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is having access to a nationwide network of seasoned commercial movers who share the same dedication to professionalism and customer service. By pairing Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to execute the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Cinemas weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with slim passageways, tight doorways, and limited access. A few locations have elevators, while others do not. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply putting them on a dolly and wheeling toward the truck.
Every challenge has to be identified before work even begins.
That's when experience truly matters.
It's All About Far More Than Just Muscle
Many people assume moving heavy equipment is purely about strength.
The reality is that commercial moving comes down to preparation, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal demand specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and skilled crews who know how to safely maneuver oversized equipment through narrow spaces.
Each projector had to be meticulously disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and carefully loaded for transport.
Many of these systems are not only heavy—they're also remarkably delicate. One accidental bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Communication and patience are just as important as raw strength.
Preserving the Building Is Just as Important
While our focus is on safely moving equipment, we're just as committed to protecting the customer's facility.
Commercial buildings represent a substantial investment, and even minor repairs can prove costly and disruptive.
Once a project is finished, our goal is for customers to remember how easy the whole experience felt, not the moving process itself.
Working Together Makes the Difference
Large commercial moving projects are never a one-person job.
Each member of the crew has a role, and communication is essential from start to finish.
One mover may be maneuvering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is monitoring clearances, while another crew member is readying the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work as a team, there is a rhythm that develops. That's a skill that isn't learned overnight.
Seeing our crew work together was a clear example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same commitment to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during demanding commercial projects, it's worthwhile to enjoy the experience.
Working inside movie theaters absolutely had its perks.
Our crew couldn't resist heading downstairs for a few movie snacks during breaks in project tasks. After spending the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
Such moments make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also love what we do.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Just Transportation
Most people assume moving companies just load trucks and unload them at another location.
Commercial moving is far more than that.
Projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating several contractors.
Each customer has different needs.
Certain businesses have to relocate hundreds of employees in a weekend.
Others need sensitive medical equipment moved without disruption.
Many projects happen overnight to reduce downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—require the careful removal of specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every project requires adaptability, planning, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when somebody asks, "Can you help with this?" our first response is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Hands-On Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has faithfully served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've learned that successful projects all come down to the same fundamentals:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll arrive prepared, stay in touch throughout the job, respect their property, and solve problems rather than create them.
No matter if we're working inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach stays the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Complete the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Part of Movie History
Among the unexpected highlights of this project was encountering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once gave life to countless films.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Being right there with them gave our crew a genuine appreciation for how much technology has advanced over the years.
It's not every day that a moving company has the opportunity to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
For us, it really was a moment we'll never forget.
